Riverwalk sidewalks poured for Highway 33 underpass

Construction crews working on the Riverwalk in downtown West Bend.

WEST BEND — The city gave its week 21 Main Street Reconstruction project update on Wednesday and announced that Steiner Electric crews will begin removing some temporary lighting to facilitate sidewalk completion in areas of the project next week.

“Steiner Electric continues to install light pole bases and panels throughout the project,” said City Communications Coordinator Jacob Moller. “Beginning next week, Steiner will remove some of the temporary lighting on the northern end of the project. This is to be done to facilitate sidewalk completion in that area.” Moller added that Steiner will also begin pulling wire and setting the new street lights next week, too. The permanent street lights will be installed later in the project.

Flatwork, or sidewalk laying, continues on the project, with crews moving southward from its northern end.

The area near the Main Street, Walnut Street and Veterans Avenue intersection is still under construction, and the temporary stop signs remain in place of the stoplights.

“The lights will be replaced later in the project,” said Moller.

He reminded people that only emergency vehicles and coordinated deliveries are allowed on Main Street at this time. Additionally, patrons are reminded that the area is an active construction zone, so while you are out shopping and dining during the day, remember to let construction workers know of your presence for your own safety.

According to Moller, the sidewalks for Phase III of the Riverwalk project, along the Milwaukee River’s west bank under the Highway 33/Washington Street bridge, have been poured.

“An exciting update on the downtown Riverwalk, the sidewalks have been poured on the west side of the river near the Highway 33 underpass and including the Highway 33 underpass,” said Moller. “So, the concrete has been poured; however, this is still an active construction site and remains closed for the time being.”

Work is still being done on Phase III of the Riverwalk project for the kayak launch, seating area, river walls and parking lot area just south of Highway 33/Washington Street. Moller added that lighting installation for Phase III will be completed this week.
